A reminder & the genesis of our publication: since ’09 hk: artist festival has been a free self guided midtown west arts walk/open studio tours. This summer our 3 night/2 day weekend featured about 100 venues, 6 parties, & all genres of art, performance, work from & put in homes, theater, group shows, local biz., galleries, gardens, taverns, etc. A byproduct & stand alone virtue has been our magazine that premiered this summer, “at the edge”. May 18-20th will bring our 4th festival and another issue!

Here is where & how you can submit work, which can also include quality & proofread poetry, photography, fiction, comics, reviews, essays, personal epiphanies or more free form expression. Art & photos may be sent alone, & accompanying your writing is optional yet encouraged. Feel free to forward this to those art collectives & individuals who you feel have writing, causes or art of literary or aesthetic merit! All images must be 300 dpi or better resolution to be usable in the print edition.

Other options that include a free magazine: do you want to exhibit art &/or perform? Would you like to work or volunteer with a fascinating & eclectic group & community, or help independently? We have tons of ways to help, learn, & benefit. Such as editing, special events, social media, graphic design, sales, film & video…those directing a department will have a large ad created for them. Ad & magazine sales will receive what is likely the highest commission you can find! Lead a group or just network & help out a bit!

You: the deprived and the overrated.

I walk among you the almighty-dollar wall street workers and you the crack children born to their Icarian destiny to soar for the high that will kill them.

I walk among you thespians and firefighters and I too have tasted all the ashes and curtain falls with no applause.

I walk among the living dead, that know not of the heart and soul.  Yet they lead us, preach us and pray for us.

I walk not among the dead but they in their turn walk with me.

I walk among fools and thieves but judge not lest I be judged.

I crawl: tiny under the moneymen… or so it seems to them.

I walk among you: the forgotten or abandoned and you: the remembered children of tomorrow.

I walk among you with a camera around my neck and a foreign tongue.

I walk among you with a country-boy innocence as you buy and sell me in your city of dreams.

I walk among you barren and you take my shoes.

I walk among you naked and you dress me.

I walk among you happily, yet you snicker thinking I’m on drugs.

I walk among you singing and you throw change at my feet.

I walk among you winos and you cast me out.

I walk among the vane and I fear the winos.

I walked among the poets and they never quite understood!

I walk among you, the normals and feel more abnormal than you do.

I walk among women and am aroused; I walk among men and am attacked.

I walk among you “the holy” and no greater sin has occurred.

I walk among you, the doctors, and you felt I wouldn’t make it.

I walked with writers, but they were bleak.

I walked with musicians but they could not remember.

I sat with philosophers and they pondered on walking.

I walked among the starving and was never so full.

I walk among liars and honest men…like two peas in a pod.

I walk among you champions but I’ve only won once.

I walk among you giants, giants that little women tore apart.

I walk among you in elevators of silence and hallways of indifference.  I walk among you in dark smoky alleys with garbage can lids falling.

I walk among you staring at car accidents in the middle of the night.

I walk among you in clubs when the smell of sex is pungent.

I walk among you in bars where somber words are burning lapses of time.

I walk among you in your heated huts with cable as you masturbate and sleep stained.

I walk among you when there’s no way out.

I walked amongst them when she died on the tracks.

I walked with you as you cried at the altar.

I walk among you as you suffer and keep smiling.

I walk among you talking to myself.

I walk among you hoping you’re staring as I ignore you.

I walk among the sick, strange, loud, poor, hated, foolish, proud and boring.

I walk among the fading memories of the good old past.

I walk among the fat and the balding.

I walk among the old and uncaring.

I walk among women in red satin.

I walk among you dreamers.

I walk among the innocent ones.

I walk among virgins and saints.

I walk amongst you all.

I walk amongst you all.

I WALK AMONGST YOU ALL…and yet, I walk alone.

All alone.

For Miami’s native pop/house techno singer/songwriter Des Shawn’a, getting to share her song written and influenced, because of an accident , is like a dream come true. Des Shawn’a’s song “Walk Right” will be featured on Des Shawn’a debut album, Des Shawn’a: “Walk Don’t Look Back”, due out in February 2012. “The fact that Des Shawn’a is working hard to give such an incredible album she’s co-producing with a new producer like her to showcase her personality,” Des Shawn’a says as her heart beat sometimes it skips a beat of flutter over the excitement.

Des Shawn’a describes her own music as pop and soul while at the same time signifying House Techno. “Des Shawn’a music is about Love/Hate & Joy/Pain. Some of the stories told in her songs can be reality and still be fun. I always choose a song that I can relate to in some way, shape, or form. My music will always be able to be identified”

Des Shawn’a’s voice is very unique and well developed requiring little to no tuning. That doesn’t mean that Des Shawn’a doesn’t seek constant improvement and constructive criticism in all areas. “As an artist and a performer, I want to be both an artist and a performer. I am constantly studying and researching everything I can about the music industry.I am not only honing my songwriting skills and vocals. I am determined to achieve and suceed.” Des Shawn’a takes and applies all the advice she receives from the music industry professionals she works with and who serve as mentors to her.

In addition to House Music, Des Shawn’a’s influences include the king of pop music, Michael Jackson. She was most touched by Michael’s music when he made “Man In The Mirror”.

Des Shawn’a has high hope for her music  that it will provide a new means for her to give back to many individuals in need. “I would like to give back to my community Seminola for helping my outlook on life,” she says, in addition to wanting to give back to other charitable organizations close to her heart such as The Gem Project, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society,The Ronald McDonald House, and the March of Dimes.

Having been involved in church choir, and various films throughout, Des Shawn’a is no stranger to the stage. “I feel at home on stage, so every stage I step foot on becomes my home during that performance,” Des Shawn’a states emphatically. Des Shawn’a performs in a variety of places, from her  church in Somerset, NJ  to boardwalks and Community/Senior Retirment Centers in New York City.

Des Shawn’a has a plan to perform on big stages, in big arenas. Des Shawn’a states, “I Give God All The Glory, because it is he that carries me”. So, Let’s just say Ready or Not Here She Comes
